What You Need to Know About Feline Arthritis

Felines are naturally nimble, agile and athletic. Cats alone are able to squeeze into almost anything and are able to do leaps and bounds that, relative to our size, ordinary men can’t. But like humans, the cat’s joints also experience wear and tear due to the stress and pressure it takes and in time, this may result to feline arthritis.

The wear and tear of the cat’s joints can be classified under osteoarthritis. There are two most common types of feline arthritis. They are osteoarthritis and traumatic arthritis.

In traumatic feline arthritis, the pain is caused by an injury or by a minor sprain which with proper healing and care will eventually go away. Some of its symptoms include inflammation of the affected area, limping and difficulty in movement. Treatment for this type of feline arthritis includes rest and anti-inflammation drugs. For severe cases, the cat may need support and dressing.

In osteoarthritis, the damage is progressive and it can progress each day unless the root cause is determined and treated. There are numerous causes and this includes their diet, being overweight or a genetic disorder.  Some of the symptoms of this type of feline arthritis include limping, abnormality in the joint area, and difficulty in climbing and jumping.

Treatments for feline osteoarthritis will depend on the severity of the problem. Some of the treatments done are taking of anti inflammatory medications, exercise and diet management and for severe cases, surgery. So if you notice that you cat is not his or her usual self and seems in pain, have the cat diagnosed immediately.
